What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? It is clear what Jesus has commanded His church to do. Matthew told us what Jesus said His church is to do at the end of the book of Matthew 28:18-20, Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
As followers of Christ we exist for His glory and for His purposes. Sometimes we may think that the call to disciple is only for those who are specially trained and with certain special skills. On the contrary it is a call for each and everyone of us. Jesus invested in the lives of 12 men and spent a lot of time investing and training these 12 to be disciples to all nations. In John 17:4 as Jesus is praying He says that He had glorified God on earth, having accomplished the work that God had given Him to do. What was that work? I believe that work was preparing His disciples to go into the world to proclaim the Gospel. Jesus said this before He went to the cross. If Jesus disciples had not been prepared to proclaim the Gospel before Jesus death and resurrection, then the message would have been lost. Now we know that was never God’s plan or purpose and we know that God has only plan A. I believe it is important for all of us to see the significance of Jesus call for us to make disciples of all nations. Discipleship is more than just sharing the news of Jesus; it is also about teaching people how to follow what Jesus has commanded us to do.
I know for myself it was all too easy to just sit back and not think it was my responsibility to disciple others. I easily dismissed it away to the fact that I haven’t been trained to do it so why would I do it? On the contrary though, I have a training manual and so do you, all of us do actually. It is the word of God. We have an instruction manual for discipleship and how we should live our lives. We as believers have all been given a helper as well in the Holy Spirit. We are God’s plan A when it comes to reaching the world. We must look at everything through the lens of the Gospel. What we should be doing is proclaiming the Gospel and that includes discipling. It is easy to get caught up in our own pursuits. There is nothing wrong with having joy in life- in fact that is why God has placed those passions in our life- but, we must be doing these things in a way that glorifies God. Our own pursuits and desires should never distract or take away from what God calls us to do. That is to proclaim the Gospel, disciple others, and to encourage fellow believers to persevere in their faith! We are chosen by God and together we serve God for His glory. He has chosen us to bring glory to His name.
But God chose what is foolish to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29
Faithfully serving with you,
